Ultra-right radicals clash with anarchists in Czech town

CeskeNoviny.cz, 13.06.2009 22:20

Prague - A meeting of ultra-right radicals in Zlin, south Moravia, staged in protest against the detention and accusation of extremists, ended up in a clash with anarchists today.

Some 50 supporters of rightist extremism collided with about 100 opponents. They succeeded in going round the police barriers that were to divide both groups.

Police detained at least one anarchist.

Nevertheless, the attendance in other ultra-right marches and meetings was very low - of some tens of people.

They were staged in Zlin, Havlickuv Brod, both south Moravia, Mlada Boleslav, central Bohemia, and Jablonec nad Nisou, north Bohemia today.

A concert of extremism supporters is to take place elsewhere in South Moravia tonight, but the police do not know where.

On Tuesday Czech police conducted a raid aimed against people linked to extremist groups. It was connected with the concerts promoting neo-Nazism that they organised.

Ten people, members of the National Resistance neo-Nazi group, were detained and accused of support and promotion of movements aimed to suppress human rights and freedoms. They face up to eight years in prison if found guilty.

The National Resistance is one of the two strongest ultra-right groups in the Czech Republic. It promotes anti-Semitism, follows the ideology of national socialism and uses symbols and colours referring to Nazi Germany.

Radicals are staging rallies in support of the detained extremists in towns all over the Czech Republic.

In connection with the raid against extremists, the police are protecting the children of Prime Minister Jan Fischer and Interior Minister Martin Pecina.

The police said the threat to Fischer might be connected with the fact that he openly professes Judaism as extremists stand up against the Jewish religion and its followers.
